The GST Council`s decision to impose a 28% GST on initial deposits in real-money games has jolted the online gaming industry, leading to significant repercussions for major gaming companies.

In the first significant fallout following this development, Mobile Premier League (MPL), a dominant player in India’s RMG industry, has announced plans to lay off 350 employees, nearly half its workforce. The decision, revealed in a memo to its staff on Tuesday, August 8, follows the recent GST Council ruling, resulting in an increased tax burden of 350-400% on the company.

In an emotional email to employees, the co-founder and CEO of MPL, Sai Srinivas, expressed his concerns, stating that while businesses can brace for a 50% or even 100% increase in taxes, this abrupt and significant hike has forced the company into making “some very tough decisions.”

Sai Srinivas

He explained, “The new rules will increase our tax burden by as much as 350-400 per cent. As a business, one can prepare for a 50 per cent or even a 100 per cent increase, but adjusting to a sudden increase of this magnitude means we need to make some very tough decisions.”

Online gaming operators and industry bodies had warned there would be serious repercussions if tax was imposed on the full face value of bets or contest entry amounts. Though the Council adopted a softer stance in its August 2 meeting by declaring tax on the initial player deposits, it still amounts to an insurmountable tax hike from the current 18% GST charged on Gross Gaming Revenue or platform fees.

MPL is the country’s second-biggest online gaming startup, with a dominant presence in fantasy sports and interests in rummy and poker. The company’s move is one of the first visible fallouts of the GST Council’s decision.

A smaller player, gaming startup Quizy also announced it was shutting operations after being hit hard by the government’s decision.

Ironically the Union government seems unmoved by the gaming sector’s plight. Addressing a question in Rajya Sabha on August 8, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman defended the GST Council’s decision to levy a 28% GST on online gaming, casinos, and horse racing.

The fate of the proposed GST Amendment Bills in the current Parliament session remains uncertain. The government had indicated its intention to enforce the decision by October 1, but recent events have raised questions about the proposed timelines. Notably, the August 4 cabinet meeting did not address the bills, leaving their timeline for enactment in doubt.

MPL Poker – Cutting Costs

Co-founded by Sai Srinivas, Shubh Malhotra, and Joe Wadakethalakal, MPL Poker is India’s second-biggest online gaming company. The company became India’s second gaming unicorn in September 2021 after raising an undisclosed amount in a Series E round at a pre-money valuation of $2.30 Billion. In February 2022, the firm acquired Germany’s leading game studio GameDuell, expanding its footprint in Europe.

Last November, MPL Poker – the poker subsidiary of MPL – announced it had crossed 25 Lakh players on its platform, claiming to have emerged as the country’s biggest online poker platform.

MPL leadership’s email to its employees, sent on Tuesday evening, makes it among the country`s first online gaming companies to undertake employee layoffs as a cost-cutting measure. However, this is not the first time MPL will be cutting its work force. The company had laid off around 100 employees in May when leaving the Indonesian market. However, the current situation has more far-reaching implications, affecting the entire Indian gaming industry.

In the present context, the move comes when the Union government is on the verge of amending the CGST Act. Once the Parliament approves it, states will follow by amending the respective SGST Acts, burdening the gaming industry with the new tax regime.

MPL’s leadership emphasized that their main variable costs are related to server infrastructure, personnel, and office facilities. With efforts already in place to reduce server and office costs, the company felt compelled to address personnel-related expenses, stating, “Regrettably, we have to let go of around 350 of you.”

The gaming giant detailed that it was performing well after turning EBITDA positive in December 2022. In June 2023, it recorded its best-ever month in business performance, beating the record in July.

According to ETTech, MPL Poker’s current valuation stands at $2.19 Billion, with the company having raised funds to the tune of $396 Million to date. Primary investors in MPL include Peak XV (earlier known as Sequoia Capital), SIG, RTP Global, Moore Strategic Ventures, Play Ventures, Base Partners, Telstra Ventures, and Founders Circle Capital.

Quizy Closes Down

Gaming startup Quizy has also felt the sting of the new tax regime, announcing the complete shutdown of operations. Founder Sachin Yadav expressed his frustration in a post on LinkedIn, pointing out that the industry has been hit hard by the removal of the ₹10,000 TDS exemption limit and a flat 30% TDS on all winnings. He added that the “introduction of a 28% GST rate on entry fees further compounded our woes and murdered the industry finally.”

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Defends Decision

The Union government has shown little sympathy for the gaming sector’s predicament. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while responding to a question raised by retired Lt.Gen. and BJP member DP Vats., in Rajya Sabha on August 8, emphasized that this adjustment aims to enhance revenue inflow for the government.

Nirmala Sitharaman
Nirmala Sitharaman

The NITI Aayog estimates the sector reached $1.9 Billion in 2021, growing by 28%, Sithraman said, revealing that the casinos are currently paying 28% GST on the gross gaming revenue (GGR), while the online gaming industry and several horse racing clubs are paying 18% GST on the platform fees/ commission, which converts to 5-20% of full face value. Other horse clubs are paying 28% GST on full face value. While online gaming companies and horse racing clubs are opposed to the spike, levying 28% GST will result in higher revenue collection, she said.

On being questioned on the reason behind imposing the 28% rate and its potential impact on the growth and revenue generation of the three sectors, Sitharaman said that the GST rate and exemption are decided based on the recommendations of the GST Council, which consists of members from central and state/UT governments who together recommended 28% GST on actionable claims in the form of betting and gambling.

Uncertainty Over Listing & Approval of Proposed GST Amendment Bills

As the monsoon session of Parliament is underway, a pivotal question remains unanswered: Will the proposed GST Amendment Bills successfully navigate the path to listing and approval this session? The government intends to enforce the new tax regime by October 1, but questions about the timeline for enactment remain.

Surprisingly, despite a cabinet meeting on the same date, the August 4 charter did not include the much-anticipated bills for consideration. The amendments to the CGST Act 2017 and IGST Act 2017 appeared absent from the agenda, raising questions about the timeline for their enactment.

This situation has prompted conjecture that the government could be exploring an alternative approach, possibly opting to promulgate an ordinance to effectuate the proposed changes.

As discussions continue, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has taken proactive steps by issuing an amendment to the Central Goods and Services Tax Rules. This action was executed under section 164 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, demonstrating the government’s commitment to navigating these complex legislative waters.

Though the final implementation date for the GST changes remains uncertain, the government’s decision to impose such a high tax has already begun to strike blows at the online gaming industry.

The poker tables at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel were ablaze with excitement as Hong Kong’s pride and Natural8 Ambassador, Danny Tang (cover image), clinched the top spot in Event #13: $60,000 No Limit Hold’em at the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series London. This triumphant victory handed Tang his fourth Triton title and a hefty $1,600,000 prize purse.

Brazil’s poker stalwart, Bruno Volkmann, who placed runner-up in Event #8: $30K NLH 8-Handed Turbo Bounty, had to settle for the runner-up position, missing out on his maiden Triton title by a whisker and securing $1,080,000.

Rewinding to March, when the WSOP bracelet winner, Danny Tang, clinched his first Triton title in Vietnam, he admitted, “I wasn’t sure I would ever get over the line.” Once feeling overshadowed by his trophy-collecting friends and colleagues, Tang’s recent victories prove that his time in the spotlight has come.

May witnessed Tang’s poker prowess in North Cyprus, where he swept two Triton titles in Event #12: $50K NLH Turbo and Event #16: $50K Short Deck Main Event. The win marked his 21st Triton score, pushing his Triton tally to $9,980,404.

According to Hendon Mob, Dan is ranked #1 on Hong Kong’s All-Time Money List, and his live tournament earnings have skyrocketed to $18,768,395 post his latest triumph.

Currently, only Jason Koon surpasses Tang’s tally of Triton titles. As the echoes of this victory reverberate, Danny Tang stands tall as a formidable force in the Triton Series. The only looming question remains: is the 30-year-old from Hong Kong poised to outstrip Koon?

In his winner interview, Tang told Ali Nejad, “I don’t know what to say, I really don’t know what to say.”

Although he recognized some improvement, Tang emphasized that his skill level hadn’t dramatically changed in the last six months. Eventually, he reached for a spiritual explanation, suggesting his victory was due to “Ivan’s (Triton co-founder) blessing, right?”

Post-victory, Tang extended heartfelt gratitude to his supporters: “All of the support, it means a lot, you know. Brazil on that side, Asia on this side. I’m just blessed to have these good friends. We can all improve together.”

The $60,000 buy-in Event #13 attracted 106 entries, including 36 re-entries, generating a prize pool of $6,360,000. The top 17 finishers crossed the money line with a min-cash worth $100,000.

Tensions ran high as players fought to reduce the field, with notable eliminations and surprising turnarounds.

The tables saw the demise of Juan Pardo at a critical juncture, leaving him in the stone bubble.

Ben Heath (11th for $130,400), Yuri Dzivielevski (12th for $114,500), Cary Katz (13th for $114,500), Webster Lim (14th for $105,500), Rodrigo Seiji (15th for $105,500), Nick Petrangelo (16th for $100,000), and Steve O’Dwyer (17th for $100,000) were the regs to post in the money finishes in Event #13.

Event #11: $125K NLH Main Event champion Timothy Adams fell short of the final table, landing in 10th place and walking away with $130,400.

You can watch the replay of the Day 2 live stream below.

The final table saw an eclectic mix of Triton veterans and fresh faces. Among the stalwarts, Jason Koon held eight titles, Danny Tang had three, Matthias Eibinger owned two, and Mikita Badziakouski boasted four. Meanwhile, newcomers Keat Liu Chun and Lewis Spencer looked to establish their presence.

Returning to the Triton tables after his previous outing in London, Elior Sion couldn’t repeat his earlier success and busted in ninth place at the hands of Keat Liu Chun. With only eight big blinds left, Sion’s couldn’t outmatch Chun’s , which made a club flush.

Despite his patient strategy, Lewis Spencer eventually pushed all in with . Unfortunately, Matthias Eibinger’s was the superior hand, and Spencer was out in eighth place, marking his debut Triton cash.

Mikita Badziakouski‘s London run was anything but smooth. His final hand with pocket kings met Danny Tang’s . An Ace on the turn spelt the end for Badziakouski in seventh place.

Sean Winter‘s tenacious effort at the table was notable. He had a close call with Matthias Eibinger, eventually succumbing in sixth place with his against Eibinger’s .

The dominant force for the better part of the tournament, Keat Liu Chun, crashed in fifth place after clashing with Tang in a hand that would change the tournament’s trajectory. Chun’s was defeated by Danny Tang’s , who rivered trip tens.

Jason Koon, the all-time leader in Triton titles, was out in fourth place after his fell short against Danny Tang’s , preventing Koon from securing a record-extending ninth title.

Matthias Eibinger‘s end came in third place when he went head-to-head with Bruno Volkmann. Eibinger’s was bested by Volkmann’s , which rivered the winning straight.

The stage was set for an epic heads-up clash. Danny Tang (65 BBs) held a significant chip lead over Bruno Volkmann (19 BBs). On the final hand, Tang limped with , and Volkmann checked his . The flop was checked by both players. The turn saw Volkmann bet 275,000, which Tang called. The river brought . Volkmann checked, leading Tang to bet 1.4 Million. Volkmann, holding a deuce, decided to bluff by shoving all in. Faced with a challenging decision, Tang remarked, “I’m not slow-rolling you, by the way,” before making the call. Tang’s straight bested Volkmann’s bluff, earning him his fourth Triton title.

In an electrifying confrontation that will long be remembered, Canadian crusher Timothy Adams (cover image) became only the third player ever to win two Main Events in the history of the Triton Super High Roller Series. Adams overcame the 151-entry field (54 unique) in the Triton Poker SHR Series London Event #11: $125K NLH Main Event, earning a breathtaking $4.185 Million as the champion, marking his illustrious poker career’s most lucrative cash prize. In addition to the eye-watering cash prize, this title awarded him an exclusive Jacob & Co timepiece and a two-night sojourn on the luxurious Bombay Superyacht.

In a gripping heads-up duel, the 37-year-old Adams triumphed over French businessman Jean Noel Thorel, a competitor over twice his age. Known affectionately as JNT in the poker world, Thorel is the oldest player ever to grace a seat at the Triton Series. With his unpredictable style and dauntless demeanour, he has rightfully earned his reputation as a super high roller stalwart. His attire for the day, a t-shirt and cap emblazoned with the word “POLICE,” signalled his intention to keep the young challengers in check. Yet, despite his best efforts, Adams emerged victorious, leaving Thorel in a respectable second place with a hefty $2.83 Million prize.

In March 2019, Timothy Adams clinched his inaugural Triton title, reigning supreme at the Triton SHR Series Jeju Main Event with a monumental win of over $3.53 Million. Not one to rest on his laurels, Adams also pocketed $1.55 Million just last week for a fourth-place finish in Event #7: $200K NLH 8-Handed at the series.

The recent title win becomes his 11th Triton score, elevating his aggregate Triton earnings to an astronomical $13,097,448. According to his Hendon Mob profile, Adams’s live tournament winnings now stand at a staggering $36,727,006, with a whopping $5.70 Million attributed to his recent exploits in the London series.

Santhosh Suvarna, India’s lone Triton champion, continues to dominate the high-stakes arena, registering his fourth notable finish in the ongoing series. Suvarna min-cashed the Main Event, placing 25th to secure an impressive $189,000 payout. Earlier in the series, he delivered commendable performances in Event #6: $60K NLH 7-Handed (12th for $112,300), Event #9: $250K Luxon Invitational (20th for $371,000), and Event #12: $60K NLH Turbo (10th for $91,500).

These scores have pushed Suvarna’s total winnings for the series to a jaw-dropping $763,800. Moreover, the Main Event marked his 11th score in Triton events, elevating his overall Triton winnings to $3,379,100.

Santhosh Suvarna’s remarkable success in high roller tournaments has elevated him to the #2 rank on India’s all-time money list, according to Hendon Mob. With the latest score, Suvarna’s live tournament earnings have reached a staggering $3,775,493, reaffirming his status as one of India’s foremost poker talents.

Still reeling from the excitement, Timothy Adams admitted in his winner’s interview, “I’m just lost for words because that was insane that I won this one. It was a battle heads up. Jean Noel, hats off to him. He is an insane competitor, super tough to play against.”

Recalling that intense moment against Thorel, Adams remarked, “When we got it in, it was a bit of a cooler. I thought that would be it for me. I couldn’t believe it when I smashed the eight on the river.”

In a heartwarming display of sportsmanship, Thorel joined Adams for the winner’s photograph. The stage was also populated with numerous other high roller regulars – both friends and rivals of Adams, underscoring that camaraderie often rivals competition in the high-stakes community. Given the thunderous applause and cheers, it’s safe to say there hasn’t been a more celebrated winner or runner-up in recent memory.

The $125,000 buy-in tournament in the magnificent Great Room of the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel drew a record-breaking turnout of 151 entries (54 unique), surpassing even the organizers’ expectations. The Main Event collected a massive $18,875,000 in the prize pool, making it the biggest-ever Main Event in Triton history. The top 27 finishers crossed the money line with a min-cash worth $189,000.

Daniel Dvoress was eliminated in 27th place as the money bubble.

Notables to cross the money line included Seth Davies (10th for $360,000), Nick Schulman (11th for $360,000), Matthias Eibinger (12th for $311,000), Paul Phua (13th for $311,000), Nacho Barbero (14th for $282,000), Webster Lim (15th for $282,000), Event #3: $40K Mystery Bounty champion Espen Jorstad (16th for $254,000), Tobias Schwecht (17th for $254,000), Wiktor Malinowski (18th for $226,000), Erik Seidel (19th for $226,000), Dan Smith (20th for $226,000), Event #9: $250K Luxon Invitational champion Bryn Kenney (21st for $207,500), Brian Kim (22nd for $207,500), Rodrigo Seiji (23rd for $207,500), Pablo Brito Silva (24th for $189,000), India’s Santhosh Suvarna (25th for $189,000), Alex Kulev (26th for $189,000), and Ramin Hajiyev (27th for $189,000).

Final Table Recap

As night gave way to morning, the atmosphere intensified. Although the average stack was on the shorter side as the final table started, it was immediately apparent that this would be a whirlwind showdown. Within just a few rounds, three competitors had already departed.

A tense face-off between Isaac Haxton and Doug Polk kicked things off. Haxton’s tens outmatched Polk’s pocket eights. Haxton prospered, doubling up, while Polk was staggering. Two hands later, Polk exited in ninth place, clashing unfavorably with Jean Noel Thorel’s kings.

Lun Loon, although a newcomer, showed promise. From being a businessman in agriculture to marking his third Triton final appearance, Loon’s evolution in the high-stakes arena was evident. However, his journey concluded when he challenged Stephen Chidwick’s pocket fives with a pair of deuces, settling for eighth place.

The once Triton Series regular, James Chen, made a formidable return after five years, only to encounter Jean Noel Thorel’s pocket aces with his cowboys. Chen’s comeback was cut short in seventh place.

Thorel seemed to be living every poker player’s fantasy. He found himself with premium pairs repeatedly, causing ripples in the line-up. After a sizable win against Chidwick, he took out Juan Pardo, who held , sending him home in sixth.

Stephen Chidwick tried to turn his luck around, but Thorel’s queens trumped Chidwick’s sevens. The British poker pro had to be content with a fifth-place finish.

Isaac Haxton, too, was in Thorel’s line of sight. An engaging showdown with a tantalizing flop ended with Haxton missing his needed cards, exiting in fourth place.

The usually dominant Dan “Jungleman” Cates found himself overshadowed, not just by Thorel, but Tim Adams too. Adams played executioner, sending Cates to the rail in third place.

As the final two stood, Thorel, riding high on his past conquests, sat comfortably with a mammoth 24 Million chips (80 BBs). Meanwhile, Adams, fresh from his last win, wasn’t far behind with a solid 13 Million chips (43 BBs). The battle began on a high note for Adams. His found a favorable flop of . Both Adams and Thorel landed the top pair; however, Thorel, holding , couldn’t find any further advantage on the board. Adams’ kicker came into play in this crucial moment, giving him the upper hand.

On the Final hand, Jean Noel Thorel and Timothy Adams went all-in pre-flop, with Adams holding and Thorel slightly ahead with . As the community cards were revealed, tension reached its peak. The flop and the turn provided no relief for Adams, and it all came down to the river. Then, in a stunning twist of fate, an appeared on the river, granting Adams the victory.

In retrospect, Adams said, “When we got it in, it was a bit of a cooler. I thought that would be it for me. I couldn’t believe it when I smashed the eight on the river.”

The action has been heating up in PokerBaazi’s grand Indian Poker Masters (IPM), with an eye-popping ₹28-plus Crores GTD up for grabs. As Day 6 concluded, the dramatic clashes across seven high-stakes contests set the stage for an adrenaline-fueled Sunday showdown. This intense competition triggered a reshuffling at the top of the ₹60 Lakhs GTD Indian Poker Masters leaderboard standings.

Holding the #1 position is Shailesh ‘MrShailesh’ Patel. His incredible winning streak, including back-to-back victories in Masters#29 Big Bounty and Masters#26 (5-Max) Hyper on Saturday and taking down Masters#20 Bounty on Friday, has allowed him to ascend the throne of the IPM leaderboard. These three title triumphs have earned Patel a staggering 6,294 points.

Once holding the #1 position on the IPM leaderboard with unyielding dominance for four consecutive days, Vikram ‘Poker_lover’ Mishra slipped down to the #3 spot after Saturday’s action. The 2023 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open (SHRPO) commenced on July 26 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, concluding on August 8. Across the 59-tournament saga, the series showcased thrilling gameplay, with Shaun Deeb and Sam Sternfield emerging as standout champions.

Fresh off winning his sixth WSOP gold bracelet this summer, Shaun Deeb clinched the $25,000 PLO High Roller title, bagging $239,100. Roger Teska followed closely, securing $219,090 for his second-place finish.

On the other hand, Sam Sternfield made a dominating run in multiple non-hold’em events. He began his streak by championing the $600 Deep Stack Six-Max Pot-Limit Omaha, pocketing $23,260. Not long after, he seized the $2,700 Eight-Game Mix title, earning a personal-best payout of $55,745.

Shaun Deeb Wins $25K PLO High Roller at 2023 SHRPO For $239,100

Less than two months after clinching his sixth WSOP bracelet in Event #27: $1,500 Eight Game Mix at the 2023 WSOP, Shaun Deeb emerged victorious in the $25,000 PLO High Roller at the 2023 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open, pocketing $239,100.

Deeb prevailed over an elite 22-player field featuring some of the globe’s premier poker talents. He outlasted Roger Teska heads-up to seize the title. Not far behind, Teska secured $219,090 for his commendable second-place finish.

The only other players to cash in were Alex Foxen (3rd for $97,800) and Ren Lin (4th for $65,200).

This triumph propels Deeb’s live tournament earnings to an astounding $12.30 Million. His recent victory echoes his outstanding performance at the 2023 WSOP. Although the Player of the Year accolade went to Ian Matakis, with Deeb narrowly missing out in second place, this momentum sets him up for a potential induction into the Poker Hall of Fame, for which he’ll be eligible in 2026 when he turns 40.

His initial victory came on July 27 in the $600 Deep Stack Six-Max Pot-Limit Omaha. With 173 entrants, the tournament amassed a prize pool of $90,825. Sternfield triumphed with $23,260 — his second-highest cash prize to date.

Exhilarated, Sternfield exclaimed post-win, “The curse is over! So many close calls. I was out for blood today.”

This win highlights Sternfield’s prowess, marking his 10th final table appearance and his 19th cash finish in an SHRP major series event.

On August 4, Sternfield clinched another victory in the series, triumphing in the $2,700 Eight-Game Mix. With 65 participants, he secured a career-best payout of $55,745. Now boasting $340,000 in lifetime earnings, most of his impressive track record has been established in his home state.

Poker luminary and Hall of Famer Phil Ivey has further solidified his place as one of the game’s greatest players, adding another significant title to his already illustrious poker legacy. The 10-time WSOP bracelet winner seized his fourth Triton title in Event #12: $60,000 NLH Turbo at the 2023 Triton Poker Super High Roller Series London, walking away with a staggering $1.007 Million.

Often hailed as the finest poker player in history, Ivey outplayed a competitive field of 61 participants to bag his fourth Triton title. Despite a performance at the 2023 WSOP that was considered lukewarm by his standards, Ivey is rounding off his summer with massive wins overseas. Before this win, he had already secured two other cash finishes earlier in the series, including a second-place finish to Espen Jorstad in Event #3: $40,000 Mystery Bounty just last week.

Ivey’s notable victory places him alongside Mikita Badziakouski, with both tied for the second spot in all-time Triton titles, trailing behind Triton ambassador Jason Koon, who dominates with eight wins. This million-dollar win also propels him back into the top ten on poker’s all-time money list.

Having now crossed the coveted $40 Million earnings mark, Ivey became the 10th player to reach this milestone. Before this triumph, he was just $15,421 short of surpassing Fedor Holz on the all-time money list. However, with this million-dollar boost, he now confidently sits at the #10 spot.

India`s Santhosh Suvarna, a VIP at the Triton Poker circuit, marked his third score of the series in this event. He narrowly missed the final table, finishing 10th and earning $91,500. Earlier in the series, Suvarna had placed 12th in Event #6: $60K NLH 7-Handed ($112,300) and 20th in Event #9: $250K Luxon Invitational ($371,000), bringing his series earnings to a staggering $574,800.

Henrik Hecklen, who placed 11th and earned $91,500, was the only other player to secure a payout without making the final table.

PokerGO founder Cary Katz swiftly emerged as a formidable force, clinching a flush that led to Sam Greenwood‘s ninth-place elimination. Katz continued his onslaught, dispatching Wai Yong (8th) and Tan Xuan (7th) with pocket Aces. It seemed the final table was turning into a Cary Katz spectacle until Nick Petrangelo leveraged double-ups through the chip leaders, seizing control of the action.

Phil Ivey regained his footing when his pocket Jacks held firm, causing Biao Ding‘s exit in sixth place. Petrangelo then crafted a decisive flush on the river, ousting Aleks Ponakovs in the fifth position.

As blinds escalated during the four-handed play, every player found themselves on the brink of an all-in or fold situation, regardless of their stack size. Ivey’s pocket Jacks came to the rescue again, eliminating Rodrigo Selouan in fourth place.

The tournament reached its climax with an all-American trio battling for the title. Nick Petrangelo went all-in with , initially leading against Ivey’s . However, an eight landing on the flop flipped the script in Ivey’s favour, ending Petrangelo’s run in third place.

Entering the heads-up play, Ivey held a 3:1 chip lead with 47 BBs against Cary Katz‘s 14 BBs.

On the climactic final hand, Katz pushed all-in with a strong , while Ivey held a less favourable . But the tables turned when the flop revealed two queens, signalling the end for Katz. With this twist of fate, Ivey triumphed, securing his fourth Triton title!

Hosted within Circa’s sprawling sportsbook, recognized as the world’s largest, the inaugural induction ceremony promises to honor a distinguished set of ten individuals, five living and five posthumously, who have left indelible marks on the sports gambling landscape.

Among the inaugural inductees, as decided by a 16-person advisory board, notable names include Billy Walters, often hailed as the greatest sports bettor of all time, Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, immortalized by Robert DeNiro in the movie Casino, and Roxy Roxborough, who brought mathematical formulas and computer models to betting.

Adding intrigue to the announcement is the induction of Poker Hall of Famer Billy Baxter. The seven-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, Baxter, who came close to winning his eighth WSOP bracelet this summer, has also been a significant influence in sports gambling, introducing halftime betting and famously clashing with the US government over the tax classification of “Professional Gambler.”

The 82-year-old Billy Baxter’s illustrious career in gambling spans decades. A native of Augusta, Georgia, Baxter started out in pool halls before transitioning to poker at 18. His achievements also encompass backing Stu Ungar in the 1997 WSOP Main Event, which Ungar went on to win. Additionally, Baxter’s legal tussle with the IRS led to the landmark case, Baxter v. United States, setting a crucial precedent for the gambling community.

The complete list of this year’s inductees includes:

Billy Walters – Celebrated as the all-time greatest sports bettor and a philanthropic icon in Nevada.

Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal – Famed sports gambler and Las Vegas casino executive whose life inspired Robert DeNiro’s portrayal in the cinematic hit “Casino.”

Roxy Roxborough – The preeminent Odds Maker of the 80s and 90s, celebrated for pioneering mathematical models in the industry.

Billy Baxter – Not just a Poker Hall of Famer, but an advocate for halftime betting and the right to declare oneself a “Professional Gambler” for tax purposes.

Jackie Gaughan – Creator of the first-ever sportsbook inside a casino and owner of eight Las Vegas casinos.

Jack Franzi – Influential oddsmaker and expert in sports betting information.

Bob Martin – USA’s premiere oddsmaker who invented the “half-point line.”

Charles McNeil: Famous bettor who popularized the point spread.

Scotty Schettler: Beloved bookmaker who started the Stardust lottery.

Jimmy Vaccaro: A face of Las Vegas bookmaking, who introduced halftime and quarter wagering.

Notably, Billy Baxter, previously enshrined in the Poker Hall of Fame in 2006, will be inducted into two Hall of Fames. Known for his fearless confrontations with the IRS and advocacy for poker as a skill game, Baxter’s dual inductions draw parallels to Cal Hubbard, the sole individual to be inducted into the Pro Football and Baseball Hall of Fames.

Derek Stevens, Circa’s CEO & founder, expressed his pride and anticipation for the event: “It’s an honor to have our sportsbook serve as the physical location for the Sports Gambling Hall of Fame. At Circa, we are all about recognizing those who have made our city and industry what it is today. We look forward to celebrating these individuals and ensuring that their legacy is cemented.”

Gadoon “Spanky” Kyrollos, the mastermind behind Bet Bash and the Sports Gambling Hall of Fame, shared similar sentiments. He applauded Circa’s vision, noting how, unlike most casinos, Circa was designed around its sportsbook. “Being a sports bettor, it’s such an incredible thing, and we love what Derek has done down here,” Kyrollos said.

Kyrollos added, “We had a blast at last year’s Bet Bash at Circa. It’s the perfect setting to come together for the ultimate sports betting gathering.”

The event promises various activities from August 8-11, from a $20,000 scavenger hunt to valuable networking opportunities.

The grand induction is set for 5 PM on August 11 at Circa Sportsbook. The Galaxy Ballroom will host the follow-up ceremony for those lucky to secure Bet Bash tickets. With such a star-studded lineup and the industry’s best converging in Las Vegas, this year’s Bet Bash promises to be an unforgettable event.
